2018 TRIP
Quito is the administrative capital of Ecuador, but it is actually smaller than the coastal city of Guayaquil. It is surrounded by many places of environmental and geological significance ( 2 mins). We will spend four days in this area. The tentative activities in Quito include:
1. January 1st: We leave JFK at 8:55 am and land in Quito at 3 pm on this day. Because we are staying near the area, we will stretch our legs a bit by walking around Centro Historico (Old Quito, 22 mins) and Mariscal Mercado (5 mins). We will have dinner as a group at the end of the day. Kim Lull and Steve Knapp will talk to you (during our evening reflection) about surviving long action packed field trips.
2. January 2nd: We will depart our hotel at 8am and spend the day visiting the following locations: Mitad del Mundo (1 min), Volcan Pululahua, Centro Historico and Teleferico. Watch this video on cloud forests to understand their role in the environment (16 mins).
3. January 3rd: We will spend this day at Mindo Cloud Forest (see 3 minute video)
4. January 4th: While we are not going to Cotopaxi Volcano anymore because it's currently kinda restless (4 mins) make time to still watch this 15 minute video on Ecuador volcanoes. We will spend our day in town, visiting Academi Columbus and experiencing the buses.
5. We will cover issues discussed in (a) Passport to Latin America: Ecuador (Part I, 15 mins) and Ecuador (Part II, 9 mins) in our meetings. Our student presenters on January 4th are Sarah and Sydne, who will talk about energy and transportation issues.

Reflect on the following topics for the Quito section of our trip (I have attached some resources, but you do not have to use them if you are not inclined [pdf versions attached below]):
1. Environmental Policies governing urban growth
2. a. Quito Bus System b. Living in a region vulnerable to natural disasters e.g. volcanic eruptions).
3. Cotopaxi (watch the 15 minute video on volcanoes above and discuss the origins of volcanoes in the region).
4. Cloud forests (16 mins). Summarize and reflect on the role of cloud forests. We will visit and do a hike in one. We will even zipline there.
